A NAMDET colleague is looking for help in completing their MSc research project around medical device training and wonders if anyone can help?
Tisha is a final-year Biomedical Systems Engineering student at the University of Warwick, currently working on a dissertation alongside MTS Health. Their research focuses on optimising medical device training through policy enhancements and standardisation to improve workflow efficiency and patient safety within NHS surgical environments. Given NAMDET’s role in advancing best practices for medical device training, they are reaching out for guidance.
Tisha asks;
As part of this project, I am developing a cost modelling framework to project training-related costs over a ten-year period, comparing the current approach with an optimised risk-based model. While this model accounts for short-term costs, its aim is to demonstrate how improved training policies could reduce incidents and associated legal costs, ultimately leading to better resource allocation in the long term. Device risk categorisation determines training frequency, based on my research into existing policies.
To strengthen my model and enhance its validity, I am seeking guidance on obtaining numerical data related to training effectiveness – such as training costs per session, replacement staff costs, incident rates, or associated legal expenses. I would greatly appreciate any insights or recommendations on sourcing such data for a specific medical device, as real-world figures would significantly enhance the validity of my model and credibility of my research.
