‘Catastrophic’ consequences after oxygen error

A BBC news report identified a patient suffered “catastrophic” consequences when staff didn’t connect their oxygen supply correctly. The health board, which was caring for the patient at the time, is investigating and says it was one of a small number of recent similar incidents. It says it is working to improve staff training to avoid similar incidents happening again.

NAMDET worked throughout 2023 to develop a free-to-access e-learning course for Medical Gas and Oxygen Cylinder safety and is available via the E learning for Healthcare website. All NHS staff can register for free and complete the e-learning course. It has 7 modules, videos, images, guides on how to set up and connect oxygen cylinders, and a quiz to help support learning. After completion a certificate can also be printed out and details added to your local training record.
